Mr Obeda Kailani is a highly experienced Consultant Ophthalmologist specialising in glaucoma, cataract and anterior-segment surgery. Recognised among the Top 50 “Drivers of Change” in The Ophthalmologist Power List 2026, he offers a comprehensive range of treatments—from laser and minimally invasive procedures to complex glaucoma surgery—with care tailored to each patient’s visual needs and lifestyle.

About

Mr Kailani is a UK-trained ophthalmic surgeon, is included on the General Medical Council’s Specialist Register for Ophthalmology and is a GMC-recognised clinical trainer.

After completing his specialist ophthalmology training in London, Mr Kailani undertook advanced fellowship training in glaucoma and anterior-segment surgery at leading centres, including Moorfields Eye Hospital, the Western Eye Hospital at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, and St Thomas’ Hospital. This extensive training provided him with broad experience in managing both routine and highly complex glaucoma and cataract cases.

Mr Kailani provides personalised medical, laser and surgical care for all forms of glaucoma. He is experienced in conventional glaucoma operations, including trabeculectomy and glaucoma drainage-device surgery, as well as newer minimally invasive and micro-incisional treatments. These include PreserFlo MicroShunt, iStent, canaloplasty and trabeculotomy. He also performs selective laser trabeculoplasty and cyclodiode laser treatment.

Alongside his glaucoma practice, Mr Kailani has extensive experience in cataract surgery, refractive lens exchange and laser vision correction. He performs small-incision cataract surgery using modern lens technology and offers refractive treatments aimed at reducing dependence on glasses where clinically appropriate. He is a fellowship-trained and board-certified cataract and refractive surgeon and has treated more than 800 patients with laser vision correction. He received the Royal College of Ophthalmologists’ Certificate in Laser and Refractive Surgery in 2019 and was subsequently awarded board-certified Fellowship of the World College of Refractive Surgery and Visual Sciences.

Mr Kailani has performed more than 3,500 ophthalmic operations and laser procedures, including a substantial number of complex cataract, glaucoma filtration and minimally invasive glaucoma procedures. His approach is centred on careful assessment, clear communication and shared decision-making. He takes time to explain the available options so that patients can make informed choices about their treatment.

Teaching, research and service improvement form an important part of Mr Kailani’s work. As a Senior Lecturer and clinical trainer, he teaches medical students, ophthalmology trainees, fellows and other eye-care professionals. He has trained surgeons in cataract surgery, trabeculectomy, PreserFlo MicroShunt and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery. In recognition of his contribution to medical education, he received the King’s College London Senior Clinical Teacher of the Year Award in 2026.

Mr Kailani is actively involved in ophthalmic research, has authored and contributed to scientific publications, and regularly reviews research for leading ophthalmology journals. He has presented his work at national and international meetings and serves as Chair of the Scientific Committee of the Arab European Ophthalmology Society. He also serves on the editorial boards of peer-reviewed journals, including Scientific Reports and the International Journal of Ophthalmology & Visual Science.

In recognition of his contribution to clinical innovation, education and the development of eye-care services, Mr Kailani was named among the Top 50 “Drivers of Change” in The Ophthalmologist Power List 2026.

Mr Kailani believes that successful eye care is not simply about treating test results; it is about understanding what matters most to each patient and protecting their vision, independence and quality of life.
